Peace of Mind: What Insurance Will You Need for Volunteer Work Overseas

When you're planning a volunteer services trip abroad, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the here and now--your passion for the particular cause you're supporting, essential details like what to pack and where to sleep, and how to raise the funds you need to get there. With so much on your mind, it's no wonder many potential volunteers fail to contemplate more mundane aspects--like insurance.

While it may seem like a tedious and (hopefully) unnecessary thing to consider, your medical insurance coverage should be high on your list of checklist priorities before embarking on volunteer travel abroad. Many overseas volunteers assume that if they have an insurance policy in the United States, their card will be valid wherever they go, but that's not usually the case. In the event that you are stricken with a sudden illness or medical emergency and need to visit a doctor or hospital while volunteering or studying abroad, most local policies don't cover treatment. Although many foreign hospitals will admit and treat an ill or injured American, they won't authorize discharge until all balances are settled.

Before departure, be sure to contact a local agent to see if your medical insurance policy is effective outside the country. If not, you may need to open a supplemental travel policy to cover you in the event of a medical emergency during your volunteer work. You'll also need to make sure it covers any evacuation fees necessary to transport you quickly back to the United States and to the medical facility of your choice in the event of a catastrophe.

Although it may be tempting to forgo the travel insurance in favor of more immediate needs, especially when you're operating on a tight budget, a supplemental policy should not be regarded as a luxury when volunteering abroad. If you're working with a volunteer program to plan your trip, they should be able to assist you with opening a policy. If not, you can contact an insurance agency directly and inquire about their travel insurance programs. The ensuing peace of mind will be worth every penny.

What Vaccinations Will You Need for Volunteer Work Abroad

Nothing is as detrimental to an international trip as a sudden illness. It can be hugely disappointing, not to mention scary and dangerous, to be sidelined with sickness during your excursion. Some countries require that foreigners receive certain vaccinations before they can visit. As each locale has different sets of guidelines, be sure to contact the Center for Disease Control to get the specifics for your destination.

There are three basic categories of vaccinations:

*

Routine Vaccinations: These are designed to immunize you from diseases that are prevalent in many foreign countries, but not as common in the United States. There are different routine vaccinations recommended for adults and children. *

Recommended Vaccinations: Although not required, these vaccinations are strongly recommended by the Center for Disease Control to prevent international travelers from contracting infectious diseases abroad. These can vary based on the location you're visiting, your age, your level of physical fitness, and the time of year. *

Required Vaccinations: Travelers visiting certain South American countries are required to receive vaccinations for Yellow Fever prior to their trip. You will have to present a certification of vaccination in order to cross the border.

Below, we've compiled a list of things you can do to help ensure that you stay healthy during your travels:

*

Get a physical. Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner at least a few weeks prior to your trip. This will allow plenty of time for you to receive and process any necessary vaccinations. The doctor will also evaluate your overall health and will discuss any potential risks you might face during your travels. *

Know the dangers. Conduct thorough research of your destination to identify any known threats, including poisonous insects and possible contamination of food and water. *

Protect the little ones. If you're traveling with infants or children, keep in mind that they may require different immunizations and health considerations. Also, if you're a pregnant or breastfeeding woman, specific precautions may apply. Be sure to ask your doctor. *

Make sure you're covered. Contact your health insurance company to determine if your policy will protect you during your international travels. If not, you might need to purchase specialized travel health insurance.

It will be nearly impossible to make a difference during your volunteer excursion if you're bogged down with illness. By seeing your doctor, receiving any relevant vaccinations, and learning as much as you can about potential risks in your destination country, you'll be more likely to stay strong and healthy for the duration of your journey.

What to Bring: Packing Tips for Volunteer Abroad Trave

When asked what they would do differently if they could re-live their first international excursion, most volunteers would likely answer that they'd have packed lighter. When traveling abroad, it can be tempting to bring as much stuff as possible. After all, it's hard to predict things like weather, recreational activities, and customs of dress. But if you bring too much, you run the risk of slowing yourself down with bulky, heavy luggage, a serious impediment when using public transportation or walking for long distances. Plus, you'll stick out like a sore thumb among the locals.

Follow these quick packing tips to ensure an easy, unencumbered journey:

1.

Always bring less clothing than you think you'll need. A few versatile ensembles should suffice. Opt for neutral colors that can be easily mixed and matched. Instead of bulky coats, pack clothes that can be layered for warmth. Expect to wear the same few pieces repeatedly--you can wash garments by hand if needed. Roll clothing instead of folding to conserve precious cargo space. 2.

Keep valuables at home. You don't want to run the risk of misplacing or damaging them during your journey. Plus, traveling with costly items, such as flashy jewelry or name-brand accessories, can imply that you're flaunting your wealth and make you a target for theft. 3.

Don't forget the first-aid. It's a good idea to keep medical staples, such as bandages, antiseptics, cold packs, and sting and bite treatment, in your carry-on bag. If you take regular medication, be sure to keep that close at hand--but make sure it's legal to bring any necessary prescriptions into your destination country. 4.

Label everything. Mark each piece of luggage with your name, address, and phone-number to help ensure that any lost bags find their way back to you. 5.

Secure valuable items. Once you've reached your destination, stash your cash, credit cards, and passport in a protected place, such as a hotel safe. In the event that you do need to carry any of those items with you, try to avoid bringing them all at once, and stow them in hidden pockets rather than in visible backpacks or purses. 6.

Keep cash to a minimum. Instead, bring one or two credit cards and traveler's checks. 7.

Save room for souvenirs. Remember that you'll be coming home with more than you brought. If you pack your bags to the gills, you won't have any room to spare for the precious treasures and mementos you amass during the trip.

The biggest challenge you'll face when packing for your international trip is determining what you won't need. Keep in mind that what seem like dire necessities at home may be dispensable once you arrive at your destination. Above all, the most important things to bring are enthusiasm, inquisitiveness, and an open mind.

Coming Home: Ways to Make an Impact after the Volunteer Abroad Program Ends

We've all heard about culture shock--that disconcerting , fish-out-of-water feeling that comes with newly visiting a foreign locale. Many international volunteers don't realize they can experience that same phenomenon upon returning home. Once you're back on familiar ground after a volunteer excursion, you may feel a little disheartened that the trip is over and disconnected from your charitable cause.

The good news is, you don't have to stop volunteering just because you're back on native soil. We invite you to explore our tips for getting adjusted and staying involved after you've returned.

*

Give yourself time to acclimate. Just as you needed a transition period when you first arrived at the foreign locale, there will be an adjustment period once you've arrived back at home. Alleviate any feelings of detachment by spending time looking through journals, photos, and mementos of your time abroad. *

Cultivate newly formed relationships. Stay in contact with the people you met during your journey. As long as both parties are interested and willing, long-distance friendships can prove to be rewarding and mutually enlightening. You might also try reaching out to local communities of people with their roots in the country you just visited as a way of staying connected with the culture. *

Stay involved locally. Although nothing rivals volunteering abroad, there are likely plenty of organizations in your area that would welcome your time, passion, and knowledge in furthering a particular charity or cause. *

Share your story. A good way to prevent your experience from fading is to speak at public venues, such as schools, churches, or volunteer organizations. Recognizing the audience's reaction to and appreciation of your efforts can be highly rewarding. *

Turn your experience into a career. One possibility is to tie your particular passion into your work. For instance, if you found it rewarding to assist orphans in Bolivia, you might consider finding a job working with disadvantaged children in your area. Remember: need knows no boundaries.

When returning home from your international travels, be prepared for local people, places, and things to seem different to you--not because they've changed, but because you have. Allow yourself some time to process the "reverse culture shock," and do whatever you can to continue to make an impact from home.

Six Sensational Sights to See at the Sunshine Coast

After a one hour drive north of Brisbane, you will discover the beautiful Sunshine Coast. You will find it an amazing place to holiday whether driving through the hinterland touring the Glass House Mountains, the Mary Valley or the Blackall Ranges or along the 100klm stretch of beaches. Beautiful towns such as Caloundra, Kawana, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Coolum Beach, Noosa and Rainbow Beach along the scenic coast offer great holiday accommodation of resort apartments, hotels, or Bed and Breakfasts. Enjoying the shopping boutiques, warm sandy beaches, alfresco dining places or just the relaxed lifestyle will ensure that you have a memorable holiday on the Sunshine Coast.

1. SURFING If you love surfing, then the swell off Point Cartwright and Alexandra Headland will be just for you.

2. ADVENTURE If it's adventure that you want, try the camel rides on the beach, jetski tours or skydiving.

3. SHOPPING Maybe you love shopping! The Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore has something for everyone and gives you an exciting shopping adventure. My sister and I enjoyed it.

4. FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT You can take your family to the famous Australia Zoo, Aussie World and Underwater World. Driving through the hinterland can take you from the Australia Zoo up to the iconic Ettamogah Pub which has a quaint little shopping village. It is right next to Aussie World which has over 30 rides and games that everyone of all ages will enjoy. It will be an all day experience just at the Australia Zoo, so you may want to divide the entertainment up over a few days. When my sister and I and her boys did a tour of these areas, we did it over a three day period.

THE AUSTRALIA ZOO is located just 45 minutes north of Brisbane on the Glasshouse Mountains Tourist Drive, and is the home to some of Australia's most amazing and unique wildlife, and a variety of interesting animals from overseas. Your visit to the home of "THE CROCODILE HUNTER", the late Steve Irwin, will definitely amaze you and make your visit memorable. There are daily feeding shows from 10am through to 3:30pm every day. You can enjoy a tasty meal also from the food court.

AUSSIE WORLD is located one kilometre north of the Caloundra exit on the Bruce Highway and the best way to get there is drive, but you can take a train to Landsborough and bus from there to the Rustic Cabin picnic grounds or Chancellor Park. From here a taxi can take you to Aussie World and the Ettamogah Pub which is situated nearby. At Aussie World rides commence at 10am and open from 9am to 5pm, but they close Xmas Day. Aussie World is planning the best Australia Day event you've ever seen on the 26th January 2009.

THE ETTAMOGAH PUB is a quirky icon that has a 1927 Chevy truck on top of its bright red roof. It is open every day from 9am until late but closes on Christmas Day. Bluey's Bar and Grill, located upstairs in the Ettamogah Pub, is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11am to 8pm but is closed on Christmas Day.

UNDERWATER WORLD, Queenland's largest Oceanarium and aquarium is situated at Mooloolaba. Be entertained by over 5,500 sea creatures such as seals, sharks, sting rays, and otters. My nephews thoroughly enjoyed being photographed with a beautiful seal after watching its playful antics.

5. HINTERLAND On your drive through the hinterland, discover the pretty town of Montville, which is home to pottery studios, art galleries, antique stores, and fashion houses. Another 20klms north through Nambour is Yandina. You will find the Ginger Factory there where you can have an interesting tour and buy gingerbread men and ginger candies made from quality Buderim ginger.

6. MARKETS Just 10klms north of Yandina is Eumundi which has the most fascinating and very popular markets operating every Wednesday and Saturday. These markets are well worth a visit but be early as the parking lots become full fast. It becomes a very interesting experience with local entertainers keeping the kids amused, and more than 500 great produce stalls selling beautifully constructed crafts, organically grown produce, and a large variety of other amazing products. Wide pathways shaded by towering heritage listed fig trees make walking amongst the stalls and old quaint buildings a very pleasant experience. My sister and I and her children had a ball.

You can unwind, relax and enjoy yourself at the coast or in the hinterland on the Sunshine Coast. Maybe you will love the area enough to find the nearest Real Estate agency.

How To See Rome On 50 Euros Per Day

Regardless of the destination, an essential part of planning any trip is deciding on a target budget for spending money while on vacation. This is especially true for major European cities such as Rome where costs have been driven sky high since the introduction of the Euro currency in 2002. Naturally, any travel budget set by anyone but the person traveling is purely speculative, as the most accurate answer obviously depends on the traveler's lifestyle and habits. Certain things are essential and non negotiable while touring. For me, such things would include a private hotel room, not a hostel, and preferably a private bathroom. In my university days, I went on a backpacking tour with my best friend. At the time, we were somehow able to survive on 30 US dollars a day to sleep, eat, and play with. My friend, much to my astonishment was able to do this without sacrificing her need for at least three cans of coke (between 2 and 3 dollars each, depending how close the vendors parked their trucks to the Eiffel tower, Big Ben, you get my point) per day.

While our 30 dollar a day budget would be impossible today (has it really been 15 years?!), my lifestyle is clearly no longer that of a backpacker, and so I'll stick to writing about what it would now take to keep a city gal like me sheltered, fed, and entertained for a day in Rome.

As accommodation in Rome can really skew a daily budget, I will leave it off of the daily tally. Let it suffice to say that a bed in a shared dorm sells for around 23 Euro in high season, and a double room at the five star Hotel Hassler will set one back no less than 600 Euro per night. Somewhere within that range, there is a bed, cot, or floor mat somewhere in Rome just waiting to take you in for the night.

A realistic budget for Rome would call for a minimum of 50 Euro in spending money per person per day (shopping budget not included). Bear in mind that you are likely to spend about 10 Euro per day in entry fees to museums or monuments, which will leave you with 40 Euro or so per day for food, drink, public transport or taxis, etc. Like accommodation, tours in Rome can be as cheap as 15 Euro or as expensive as 500, so we'd better leave those out of the basic equation as well.

Here are some tips on putting our target budget into practice. Most hotels, hostels, and B&B's will provide breakfast with an overnight stay. Don't be shy! Eat up, stuff your purse with a few bananas from the buffet, and have them later for a mid morning snack! You can save money at lunch time by having some "pizza a taglio" (pizza by the slice). If that doesn't hold you till dinner, a mere 1.50 Euro will get you a heavenly cup or cone of creamy Italian gelato which should keep your tummies pleasantly full for a few hours. Save the real meal, not to mention your precious Euros and your appetite, for a nice dinner. A full dinner in a typical Roman restaurant should cost between 20 and 30 Euro per person, wine included.

Adventure Travel to Kenya: Discover Kenya's Best Kept Secrets

How would like adventure travel to Kenya, to learn some of Kenya's best kept secrets? How about checking into Hemingway's, a luxury hotel on the Indian Ocean, or spending some time in the same area that Elsa was released into the wild by Joy Adamson? You can enjoy these, and more, with luxury adventure travel to Kenya, land of the Luo, Kalenjin, Turkana and the famous Maasai warrior race, as the name is correctly spelled although we shall use the more popular western spelling of Masai.

The capital is Nairobi, and that would be a good place to start. There are many types of hotel in Nairobi, but if you can, try to book into one of the few boutique hotels that accommodate only a few guests, twelve being a good number. For that you will have to book yourself a luxury adventure vacation, with personal service offering vacation planning from just yourself and your partner.

That is a better way to enjoy Kenya's secrets, rather than traveling in a large group of 40 or more as most people do. If you can find a tour company that offers this level of personal service, then your vacation can be tailored to suit your own timetable and needs, and not those of the majority, or even in some cases the minority!

Nairobi has a lot offer somebody seeking adventure travel to Kenya, and you don't have to travel to unknown places to discover some of Kenya's best kept secrets. Take Karen Blixen's house, for example, the author of 'Out of Africa', made into an Oscar winning movie, or the Carnivore restaurant, where you can dine on some exotic game. You should also check out Masai crafts at the Utamanduni Craft center and visit the giraffes at the Giraffe Center.

However, it is the game reserves that most people visit Kenya to see, and that adventure travelers to Kenya are particularly interested in, so take a plane ride over the Meru National Park and land near Elsa's Kopje - a rocky outcrop on Mughwangi Hill in the Meru Park, where Elsa was released by Joy and George Adamson back in 1958.

Why not spend some time in the park and check out the elephants, leopards and cheetahs, and of course the lions. Unfortunately the big game, the lions in particular, are in grave danger in Nairobi Park due to the action of humans, so take advantage of the opportunity to see them in the wild while you can. Although most people prefer to go on guided safaris, others prefer fishing and nature walks, or even just to lie by the pool. It's your vacation so indulge yourself.

You must then visit the Masai Mara Nature Reserve, where the big game animals are less under threat from human activity. Try to head for the Cottar 1920 Mari Safari Camp, where the 22,000 acre private concession houses only 12 guests, but it's well worth it, and no luxury adventure travel to Kenya should miss a visit to Cottars. Calvin Cottar is one of the best guides in the country, and will take you on a game drive in a 4WD or even a more traditional ox cart. It is an advantage that the camp is not part of the reserve, because you can go on night drives and guided walking tours, which would not otherwise be permitted.

Malinda is another part of Kenya you must not miss: situated on the Indian Ocean Malinda offers Hemingway's a luxury hotel that offers the very best personal service. Use it as a base for a trip to Lamu Island, which used to be a base for the slave trade, and on which the only means of travel other than foot is by donkey. Try a dip in the ocean or simply relax by the pool, contemplating what you have seen

The type of luxury you can experience on these trips is unbelievably high, and adventure travel to Kenya is not all safaris and living rough. You can also do it in style, but make sure that your price is all-inclusive since the extras for the flights and safari trips can be high. A good luxury vacation company will offer you all-inclusive deals that will work out cheaper in the long run than trying to keep your initial costs low and pay your own way. You will either end up paying more, or missing out on a lot, which would be a shame after traveling so far.

Try to get a personal deal, with just the two of you traveling, rather than being part of a large group, and make sure that your travel is commensurate with the luxury you are seeking: a minimum of business class flights, and first class rail and road travel where it is involved. Your accommodation should be the best available, and the small personal hotels are often the best.

Achieve all that, and there are no reasons why your luxury adventure travel to Kenya should not provide you with the vacation of your dreams, the memories of which will last you a lifetime.

Bad Eco-Tourism Does More Harm Than Good

Tourism is a booming industry. With many travellers flocking to different destinations around the globe, tourism is becoming one of the most viable business markets in the world. However, air travel, car travel and other aspects of tourism are adding to the planet's pollution crisis and this is becoming a problem. Travel operators and hospitality corporates realised that some action needed to be taken, and Eco-tourism was created as a solution to this problem.

Eco-tourism is now one of the fastest growing sectors of the tourism industry. Eco-tourism involves the conservation of biological and cultural diversity through education of locals and tourists alike. By protecting ecosystems it has had a positive effect on the local communities and their livelihoods through their participation in projects and lessening the impact on the environment.

Why Eco-Tourism?
A tourist operator who offers eco-tourism is basically an operator who makes no negative impact on the environment and helps to sustain and promote the life of the local ecosystems.

Their activities should not pollute the local surroundings and have a mutually beneficial relationship with local residents through education of how to sustain themselves without damaging the environment. In South Africa, teaching locals how to make crafts from empty cans and used containers to minimise litter and help create a source of income is one example of this. The tour operator should also be involved in the education of locals concerning the environment and teaching them how to live in harmony with it, instead of destroying it.

There are many benefits to eco-tourism, yet many hospitality providers claim they offer eco-tourism holidays and accommodation when they do not. Governments and tourism providers are leaning towards the promotion of anything which involves nature as eco-tourism, allowing activities which are not based upon sustainable development of the environment and communities.

Tourism ventures such as low-impact tourism, green tourism, bio-tourism and ecologically responsible tourism are advertised as eco-tourism when they do not fall under this category realistically.

The Problems with Fake Eco-Tourism
"Green washing" is a term used to describe the occurrence of a tourism operator claiming to offer eco-friendly holidays when they are in fact, environmentally destructive. This practice involves the commercialisation of tourism involving nature and some ecological projects as eco-tourism. Many people flock to these tourism operators and end up doing more damage to the environment than if they had not used a 'green' operator. They are destructive towards the environment, are insensitive towards cultural needs and exploit the tourism economy. They are also misleading to tourists as they appeal to the desire to help the environment which tourists have, yet destroy the environment, not giving the tourists what they have asked for.

Despite some operators meeting the guidelines, there may still be a negative impact on the environment and local communities. Eco-tourism operators need to have a thoroughly positive impact on the environment with few, if not no negative impacts. If there is a negative impact, this should be counter acted by some kind of compensatory action such as planting trees and so forth.

South Africa is currently reaping many economic benefits from eco-tourism but there are still problems with displacement of people, violations of constitutional rights and negative impact on the environment from tourism activities.

An eco-tourism operator should be involved in investing in the local ecosystems and conservation. Rejuvenation of the natural resources and the education of locals in living in harmony with these ecosystems is paramount to eco-tourism. Education of tourists, assisting the livelihoods of locals in supporting themselves without negative environmental impact and the conservation of biological and cultural diversity should be not only endorsed but achieved through eco-tourism. Money generated from eco-tourism should also be invested in furthering conservation efforts.

Kayak Halong Bay tours: The World's Nature Heritage of Vietnam

Ha Long Bay (also "Halong Bay") is in northern Vietnam, 170 km east of Hanoi. The bay is famous for its scenic rock formations

If you thought the hideout in the James Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun" was spectacular, imagine a place where there are 3,000 such limestone islands clustered together in the East Sea of Halong Bay. Paddle through caves into secret lagoons, drift down channels surrounded by cliffs and forest and sail out into the open sea. Relax on the deck of our luxurious double-sailed junk and look forward to seafood bought straight from passing fishing craft. Swim alone amongst the limestone islets under the stars and take a breather at a floating village hidden amongst the islands. Our fiber glass sea kayaks make for satisfying travel, whether you are an Olympic champion or first time enthusiast.

GETTING THERE

The best way to get to Ha Long Bay is to rent a car from Hanoi from a tour opganizer as ActiveTravelVietnam (ATV). It costs approximately US$100-US$120 return. There is also a tourist open bus service offered by travel agencies around the Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. Cost is around US$8 net/person/way.

Public buses leave from Long Bien Station to the Bai Chay Station (other side of Red River, 5km from Hoan Kiem Lake) every 30 minutes from 6AM to 6PM and cost 50,000 dong/person each way. This is not recommended for foreign travelers, as these buses are often crowded, slow and unsafe.

THE POPULAR TRAIL (starting from Hanoi)

Day 1: You leave Hanoi for Halong Bay at 8.30am with a short break for refreshment at a handicraft centre. Upon arrival in Halong City you will board a Chinese-style wooden boat (locals call it "Junk") for a fine seafood lunch and a short cruise to one cave. After a short exploration of the cave you start the kayak exploration of the bay, paddling through an amazing area of limestone islets, passing a floating village to reach Luon Cave, which is a tunnel thrusting through a mountain. Paddling through the tunnel to explore a beautiful secluded lagoon. End of the first with dinner and overnight in AC, private junk's cabin.

Day 2: This kayaking day starts from Van Chai Floating village and then continue paddling to Dark Cave. The cave is a 200m long, dark tunnel thrusting through a limestone mountain. The tunnel is the only entry to a secluded and beautiful lagoon. You can also explore some other caves nearby. After lunch you paddle to Ba Trai Dao Lagoon, along a stunning and fairly rough sea channel, to explore its beautiful beaches. Then continue paddling to Lan Ha Bay, which is smaller than Halong Bay but much more interesting with lots of secluded beaches.

Day 3: Breakfast is served on the junk and you will enjoy the sundeck while the Junk navigates amazing rock formations of Bai Tu Long Bay to get back to Halong City. Lunch on the junk before heading back to Hanoi by bus.

WHEN TO KAYAK

You can do kayaking on the bay all year around but great time is between October and June. A typical kayaking day starts at about 8.00 am after breakfast. Lunch will be served on support boat. At the end of a kayaking day, we would return to the junk by 5 pm or 5.30 pm.

TRAVEL GEARS

On this trip ATV use hard-cell, tandem kayak. Paddle, life-jacket and dry bag are available. We recommend you to bring some extra gears such as Sun block, hat, anti-insect repellent, sunglasses, rain coat. The kayak tour with well-trained and experienced tour guide is always recommended for a best exploration.

A Phuket Holiday That's Easy on the Pocket

The beach beckons: the tranquil waters, pristine sands, friendly faces, scrumptious delicacies and the alluring charm of an island paradise called Phuket. Who wouldn't want to experience all these and even more? In Phuket, you can enjoy a sun-kissed vacation spree with friends or family all year round - even while on a budget.

Life's A Beach in Phuket

Phuket is an island-province situated in the southern part of Thailand. Being the biggest island in the country, Phuket has no land boundaries. Instead, it is surrounded by bodies of water. Located on its west side is the Andaman Sea while off its east coast are several bays. The coast of Phuket is known worldwide for its magnificent white sand beaches. Add this to the rich culture and tropical climate of Thailand and you just got yourself a ticket to a perfect vacation.

This tropical paradise is hot and humid throughout the year, with the high season starting from November up to May. Mornings and afternoons can be quite sunny and clear during the summer monsoon season. May to October is considered the cool season but is still great for beach-going. This said, a getaway in Phuket can always be enjoyed come rain or shine.

Enjoy Phuket On A Budget

However, many would-be vacationers are concerned with not having enough funds for a Phuket trip. What should you do when you're on a tight budget? Luckily, there are several ways to enjoy a well-deserved Phuket holiday for the cash-strapped traveler. First of all, you must set a budget. Determine how much you can afford to spend for a Phuket holiday. And when in Phuket, keep track of your spending. Try to maintain a daily budget and work along this figure to keep your costs at bay.

A little tip: tweak your budget in case you overspend. This way, you have that extra little cash to spend around, even get to splurge on that great island souvenir you wish to bring home. If you are charging with that nifty plastic card of yours, make sure that you are paying off your bills within 90 days to avoid unnecessary interests and other charges.

Book Early

It is also better to book in advance as rates go high during peak months. It's also wise to make your airline reservations early. Saving on cash, however, doesn't mean you have to stay at an el cheapo hotel. If you book early, you can choose which place to stay in at an affordable rate without compromising on the quality of your vacation. Choose establishments that have a high customer feedback satisfaction.

Booking Cheap International Flights To Asia

If you are having a hard time finding cheap international flights to Asia you are not alone. Most major international airlines are cashing in on the fact that Asia is a hotspot for tourists from Europe and American and will very rarely if ever, offer cheap international flights to Asia.

The good news is that persistence pays and in your search for cheap international flights to Asia here are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure that you will get the best deal?

Should You Book Your Cheap International Flights to Asia early or late?

Can you count on getting a bargain at the last minute? With costs going up for all the international airlines, it seems that the odds of getting cheap international flights to Asia at the last minute are very slim.

If at all there is a cheap air fare, you can be sure it will be snapped up quickly; most likely on the first hour of the first day itself. Deals are available, but last minute deals are rare. Airlines are encouraging people to book in advance through discounted offers and very often cheap international flights to Asia are available a couple of months in advance. Airline budgets are getting tighter and the number of flights going out to destinations is being reduced to maximize profit.

The Early Bird gets the Cheap International Flights to Asia

In general, booking early will get you a good deal; booking a summer flight in January or February will be far less costly than booking the same flight in March or April. With the reduction in capacity, half empty planes are becoming less and less common. This means that the chance of snapping up a last minute deal is low.

However, you should never say never. In the event that you cannot find cheap international flights to Asia, one of the options you can explore when travelling in Asia is the low cost carriers that operate within the major hubs in the region. Singapore's Changi Airport could be considered a hub for many of the major air carriers, much like Atlanta in the United States.

Low Cost Carriers and Cheap International Flights to Asia

There are many low cost, no frills airlines around the world. However, they mostly operate in a given region and rarely travel between continents. This means that even if you cannot find cheap international flights to Asia, you can still avail of bargain prices on domestic flights between the cities of the same country. Some low cost carriers will also operate between Asian countries.

If you are travelling around Asia, it might be an idea to consider booking flights on the low cost carriers between the countries that you intend visiting. Long haul flights offered by low cost airlines are only now being introduced between London and some parts of Southeast Asia. However, travel between south eastern Asian countries such as Singapore and Vietnam can be accomplished relying mainly on the low cost air carriers. There are also a handful of domestic airlines operating in Asian countries.

For example, if India is on your travel itinerary, you should note that there are half a dozen low cost airlines competing in India, so you may get a good deal on domestic flights on the subcontinent.

Eco hotels around the world

The Hotel world is changing and for the first time it finds itself in the impossible position of having to provide comfort and luxury whilst also satisfying the discerning eco-aware customer.
You see it had to happen eventually, recent studies suggest that the classic hotel is regarded as a kingdom of wastage where the average visitor abandons its well-crafted ecological habits in favour of a careless "I paid for this" attitude. The average guest would check-in to a hotel and immediately forget to turn lights off when not needed or would leave the tap running or even the TV on when not in the room, all things that at home seemed to be more obvious.

As time has gone by, it seems that the onus has fallen onto the hotels themselves to teach and be more in tune with the environment so that in time the guest attitude would change.

Whilst this is true of the inner city industry, in the same timeframe the world has seen an explosion of eco lodges and hotels carefully placed in the most ecologically interesting places on the planet from mountains to jungles and in these a new breed of traveller is enjoying the beauty of nature in the knowledge that their stay is not impacting on it.

Of course with this new-found interest a whole selection of lists and online guides have appeared to try and show the interested public where these new hotspots of eco-entrepreneurship are located. My favourite at the moment is www.ecohotelsoftheworld.com

Easy Tips to Make Your Cruise More Enjoyable!

Are you getting ready to take your first cruise or are you cruising for the first time in awhile? What an exciting time! Let these easy tips help you be more prepared:

Don't try to smuggle in liquor or wine in your suitcase. They almost always find it and you'll be embarrassed. It will also hold up your luggage from being delivered to your room when you arrive. If you want to take your favorite wine, just let them know when you embark. They'll fill out some paperwork, take the wine, and charge you a $15 uncorking fee when they bring it to you at dinner.

Don't pack more than you can comfortably carry or roll. You're going to want to take advantage of quick "check out" and leave when the ship docks instead of waiting for someone to transport your luggage. Don't over pack. For a 7-day cruise, take 4 nicer outfits for dinner and 4 casual, comfortable outfits for daytime. If you like to sun yourself, you'll spend a lot of time in a bathing suit and cover up.

Speaking of dinner outfits, rarely will you see people dressed up anymore. A nice pair of capris with attractive sandals and a pretty blouse, or a shirt tucked into a pair of khakis, is appropriate. Casually elegant is the look you want!

All ships have professional photographers on board. Consider before leaving home if you want to take advantage and have some family or personal portraits made. If so, take the appropriate clothing. Speak to the photographer and arrange sittings. They're very accommodating. The quality is excellent but a lot more reasonable than most photography studios on shore.

Take a shawl and a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt, even if you're visiting the tropics! Windy days on the ship can be very cool and the theaters and lounges where you'll attend shows are usually cool.

Attend the shows! They're usually wonderful! Don't avoid a show because juggling, for instance, isn't your thing. You'll be thoroughly entertained and will laugh until your side hurts! The entertainers are professionals.

Take walkie-talkies if you have people with you that you want to keep in touch with or find on the ship. Your cell phones probably won't work and the roaming charges won't be economical.

If you like to spend time in the sun or at the pool, you may want to consider taking an extra beach towel from home. The ship will provide one per guest but not extras. Some ships will provide an extra one with a $25 deposit. They're very protective of their towels.

The food on board is usually delicious but the biggest complaint is that it's not warm enough. Anytime you're carrying your food outside to eat, grab two plates and cover the plate of food with the extra plate to transport it. This will help some but the food cools quickly.
Follow these easy tips and you'll have a grand time! Bon voyage!

Discover Kuta Lombok

The first time I came to Kuta, Lombok I had mixed feelings as its reputation around Lombok wasn't so spectacular. I was pleasantly surprised to find a friendly and happy little community at one of the most scenic places on Lombok.
Witnessing big reef breaks, and having been told about strong currents, I wasn't quite sure what I was getting into, concerning the diving, but I thought to myself, "Ok, now let's see". Crossing the bay on one of the little local outrigger boats we came to a massive sheer cliff, and dropped into one of the most amazing underwater sceneries that I've ever seen. Descending down along a steep slope lined with massive, coral rich, boulders we were joined by Giant Trevally and massive Grunts. Descending down towards where the big shadows were moving about, I was amazed by the abundance of macro life and huge lobsters we encountered on the way. At around 30m, we realized that the shadows we seen from above were huge potato groupers zipping in and out of the many crevices. As we continued on, a slight current carried us toward the mouth of the bay, and as we slowly ascended to around 15m a giant school of Mobula rays darkened the sky above us. They just wouldn't stop circling, and it seemed like the school had no beginning or end. As we continued ascending we went right through the school of Mobula, and they weren't at all bothered by our presence. On the contrary, it seemed more like they were enjoying the sight of the "strange creatures" they had encountered. Up until this day I've had plenty of great diving around Lombok, but this day ended for me with a huge smile on my face and a certainty that this is the place to set up a new dive shop in South Lombok.

In this area of South East Lombok, the water conditions are variable and occasionally subject to rougher seas. Nevertheless the dive sites are well suited for divers of all levels. The reefs are very intact, and apart from the many colorful reef fish, there is an abundance of macro life, crabs and lobsters to be found, and the chances of seeing turtles and white tip reef sharks are fairly high. You are also likely to sight blue spotted stingrays, cuttlefish, scorpion fish and more while diving this in this underwater paradise. Kuta, Lombok offers a great variety of possibilities for new discoveries as well as pristine reefs!

From Kuta it's easy to take daytrips to all of the pristine dive locations around Lombok. Whether you want to experience Sekotong, Gili Trawangan, Belongas Bay or the not so well know dive sites of East Lombok, the local dive shop there specializes in organizing these dive daytrips and caters to your wishes in a professional manner. On these daytrips you can enjoy good service, the landscapes of Lombok, and visit the best dive sites around the island.

In Kuta one will find many activities to pass the time. Rent a boat and cruise around the bay, go horseback riding, rent a bicycle and explore the area, play beach volleyball and of course excellent diving. Kuta also presents itself very welcoming, and you'll find many small restaurants and cafes with tasty international and Indonesian food. It's a place where you can let yourself be spoiled by the friendly and open population.

As per the Eve Prime Retail Survey 2004, Guildford is the most beautiful and safe place to make shopping. Guildford had also been ranked 27th in the whole of England.

Moreover, Guildford also contains a small museum found in the town centre. The University of Surrey can be found to the north-west of the town centre. The Guildford Cathedral can also be seen from the university’s main campus. The Royal Surrey County Hospital is also nearby. To further enhance the situation, Guildford also has a major Art Gallery at surrey. The gallery is mostly known as the Guildford House Gallery and may receive more than 120,000 visits every year. The gallery is supervised by the Borough of Guildford and owns its proper art collection. The various art works come from the neighbourhoods as well as Guildford artists.

Guildford can also boast to have a theatre called the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Guildford as well has a cinema called Odeon. There is something unique about this cinema: as of June 2007, it is the only cinema in the world displaying digital quality videos to the public. Additionally, Guildford is the ideal place for tourists as it has restaurants which serve a wade variety of food. Nightlife activities are equally possible at Guildford as there are several bars, pubs and nightclubs. Every year the Guilfest music festival as well as the Surrey County Show takes place at Stoke Park in Guilford.

Furthermore, Guildford is a town where many farmers live. Agriculture is also favoured there. Therefore, that makes of Guildford a market town with market days being Fridays and Saturdays. A farmers market takes place on the first Tuesday of every month. So, Guildford can really be a place worth the visit. Whether you want a peaceful holiday or an extremely mobile one, Guildford can be the right place to go. With hotels all around the place, you may be offered a service of quality and hence fulfill your desires of enjoying an unforgettable holiday.

Apart from its historical background, the different aspects earlier seen make of Guildford an even more beautiful place to go. So, during your passage to England, do not forget to visit Guilford. It could turn out to be a worthwhile deal.

A Few Things To Note About Flying In and Out of Thailand

If you live in North America, finding a cheap destination is a big priority this year. Thailand represents a killer deal and it is very friendly towards Americans. If you are going for the first time, however, there is something you need to know about the flight.

To be honest, there are a couple of things you need to know about flying to Thailand. The first thing to grasp is the flight is long. I’m talking watch the grass grow long. I’ve flown internationally much of my life and the flight to Thailand feels like it is one of the longest. Depending on where you are coming from, it will clock in at 22 to 28 hours.

The second thing to know is that you really need to pay attention to the difference in time between your location and Thailand. From the west coast of the United States, the difference is such that you often fly into Bangkok at about one o’clock. One as in the time the bars are closing! It is pretty much just you and your fellow travelers in the airport.

Before you mark Thailand off of your list of destinations, it is important to keep in mind that pretty much everything is open at this late hour. They Thais know the flights are coming in late and cater to them. You can get taxis, hotel rooms, change money and so on. It is not a situation where you walk out of the airport and a tumbleweed rolls down the road.

The third key thing to know has to do with your flight out of the country. You really need to call in and check for updates on the flight out a few days to a week ahead of time. Why? The flights change all the time. They usually leave on the same day, but may do so as many as six hours earlier than it reads on your ticket.

This leads to some fairly amusing situations. The Thais are mortally offended if you miss your flight. If there is any chance of getting on it or a flight to the same destination, they will drag you all over the airport to get there. I’ve often ended up on a different airline asking where the heck I am going. Despite the chaos, it always seems to work out.

A Caribbean Honeymoon To Petit St Vincent

Don't book a Caribbean Honeymoon without checking out Petit St Vincent in The Grenadines

A Caribbean Honeymoon to Petit St Vincent is well worth taking the trouble to research.

Petit St Vincent is a five star Caribbean resort which has 22 rooms, and is described in its own brochure as an exotic Cottage Resort on its own 113 acre island which is completely surrounded by two miles of white sand beaches and it places great emphasis on privacy. It is 40 miles south of St Vincent in the Grenadines.

Petit St Vincent is well away from the tourist mainstream

This all sounds perfect for a Caribbean Honeymoon Vacation, and certainly needs checking out.

The first thing to note is that petit St Vincent has no television, pool, or telephone, no airport, not even a formal check in, so what you are going to get is fabulous seclusion well away from the hustle and bustle of Caribbean life, and that above all should make it perfect for that Caribbean Honeymoon.

This is very much a lay back and relax sort of place, and the level of privacy works well.

Petit St Vincent has one almost unique feature which are the flags. If for example you want room service breakfast, you hoist a yellow flag, and you will get an extremely quick response by golf cart, or alternatively if you don't wish your early morning Caribbean honeymoon to be disturbed you raise a red flag that says Do Not Disturb.

This being the case you are left in splendid peace in your great private luxurious stone cottage on the beach. In fact if you want to be a hermit during your time on petit St Vincent, you need never even see another guest thanks to the ability to order all your meals in your stone cottage. This would be a mistake because the resort has a beautiful bar and dining room

The cottages themselves are mostly just a few paces from the beach, both remote and secluded yet within easy and quick reach of the resort's services. The cottages are built from native blue bitch stone which is quarried on the island itself, and the hardwood ceilings are peaked. The cottages are quite open to the elements with large French windows that are almost the whole width of the bedroom, and when open look out over the large sundeck to the beautiful azure sea beyond. Each cottage in addition to the sundeck has a living room, one or two bathrooms, and dressing room. The bathrooms are particularly nice with a shower, robes, fluffy towels and top class toiletries. In addition there are day beds for children if required, but probably not on a Caribbean Honeymoon!!

Petit St Vincent is one of the Leading Small Hotels of the World and well deserved this distinction, and there are many activities on the island to enjoy and these include snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, water skiing, and fishing, and you will find Hobie Cats, and Sunfish in the dock house at no extra cost. On land, there is plenty island to hike over, and there is a lovely floodlit tennis court.

PSV is the ideal place for a secluded, private hideaway sort of Caribbean Honeymoon Vacation, where the sun shines, and even the most cynical guest will find peace and contentment

A Caribbean Island Resort On Canouan Island In Saint Vincent And The Grenadines

Mention a Caribbean Island Resort on Canouan in the Grenadines to anyone and they automatically think of Raffles, but the Tamarind Beach Resort and Yacht Club is very well worth checking out, and apart from the fact it is a lot less money, it is in fact a very good place to spend a Caribbean Island Vacation.

It has just forty rooms, so if you prefer small and beautiful to big and glitzy this could be right for you. Tamarind Beach sits on a long white sand beach surrounded by tropical gardens, and the location is absolutely stunning.

To get to this Caribbean Island resort is just a short hop by a small plane from St Lucia, and you will be met by someone from the Tamarind who will drive you the ten minutes it takes through the main village to the resort. You will quickly be aware of the mossies, so you will need your bug spray. Greeted at the Tamarind by a nice cooling drink, you will realise very quickly how friendly the staff are, and this compares very favourably with many other Caribbean Island Resorts.

The regular rooms are completely lined in lovely polished wood from the floor to the walls, to the decking that leads straight out onto the beach, as all rooms are beachfront. If you can afford it, and if you were even considering Raffles then you will be able to afford a Suite at Tamarind Beach Hotel. The suites are lovely, and they include a microwave and a coffee maker, a living room and a separate bedroom. The living room has a day bed and a coffee table, and a large balcony with chairs and loungers. Being up on the second floor there is more breeze, and there is no need to leave the air-conditioning on when you go out, just leave the shutters open. The screens will keep out the bugs, and you will only need air conditioning to sleep at night. There is a king size bed and a nice bathroom.

A Caribbean Island Vacation would not be complete without a great beach, and the beach at the Tamarind Beach Hotel and yacht Club is one of the nicest and best swimming beaches in the whole of the Caribbean. There are several beach loungers for the guests of the Tamarind, and a beach area valet to look after you. Non guests, mostly visiting people from the yachts which are moored offshore have to pay for the privilege, so the lovely white sand beach is hardly ever remotely busy, and the water warm and clean with no dangerous rocks to stub your toes on. There is comlimentary sunfish sailing, snorkeling, and windsurfing.

Food is another important consideration in any resort never mind a Caribbean Island resort, where lets face it the food can be quite mundane. Not so at the Tamarind Beach where the food is very good, whether you are eating a beach snack at the Pirates Cove Bar, or a meal at the Palapa Restaurant, an open air restaurant right at the waters edge.

Be clear, Canouan as a Caribbean Island vacation spot is not the kind of place for frenetic partying, and there is very little shopping. The Tamarind beach Hotel Resort and Yacht Club is a place for peace and quiet, and gentle unwinding.
